Daft Punk Thomas' Helmet by ScannerJOE Daft Punk Thomas' Helmet by ScannerJOE
Finally here's the long awaited ScannerJOE's version of the Daft Punk Thomas' helmet.

The file is at [link] it includes pepakura, blender, and manual files.

This is not like any other papercraft as it introduces my new technique to build spheric surfaces using thick cardboard (around 2mm), WITHOUT USING MACHE.

This is the one shown at [link] and [link]

Enjoy it!

Hola ScannerJOE

Saludos

you can download Blender for mac here:
www.blender.org/download/#acti…
maybe you can run paperkura inside Mac using Wine (windows emulator) or maybe finding a kind of pdo viewer for mac...

Thank you and don't worry about english it's not my language either.

Answering your questions:

1. Sure you can build some parts.
2. It is regular spray paint in the end, but first i have applied two or three coats of water diluted white glue (50/50%) to the cardboard to make a shine effect.

Good luck!
And enjoy it.

thank you!
now i finally got the paper so i can start working on it :D
but i have a new problem- my head is bigger then yours, and when i scaled the model to my size some of the parts (the ear parts) are bigger then one page! i searched every where but couldnt find "double papers" for sale. w
what shoudl i do? should i just print it and then glue together this part into one part?
thank you so much for your help!

Well first of all it was made for my wife not for me :).

You'll have to work on pepakura to split the parts that don't fit in one page or you can print them in two pages activating the option to print alignment lines (Settings>Print and paper settings>Print alignment marks for multiple pages) so you can print a multipage pattern.

Is your choice, enjoy papercrafting!

In the 2D view right click and select "Join/disjoin face" or press Ctrl+N, then click over a join and it'll split, finally right click again and select "Select and move" to move the separated part.

Sure there are videos but they are too advanced for this task you want to know.

Segun Pepakura 22.6cm alto, 22.6cm ancho, 27.4cm fondo. Pero eres libre para cambiar las dimensiones con Pepakura designer.

I don't remember if i've included an obj file in the zip but if it isn't you'll have to open the file with Blender and export it to obj, i can't remember if Blender has a 3ds max export option.

Where can I find "transparent acetate covered with commercial polarized
paper" and can you give a bit more detail on the LED set up?

ScannerJOE Featured By Owner Jul 17, 2012  Hobbyist Artisan Crafter
I don't know if such a thing exists, that's why we covered transparent acetate with polarized paper, there are youtube videos out there where you can learn how to do this in a profesional way. About the LEDs, they're just a "screen" built with resin, we took 4 LEDs to make a mold and then replicated it to make the full screen; behind of it are 10 high intensity LEDs connected in parallel to two 1.5volt batteries. The LEDs are pointing to the front.

Is there any way we can get the pieces in a PDF or JPG file? I downloaded Blender, but I have no idea how that works, so it would be much appreciated :P

Sorry, the best chance is by using pepakura with PDFCreator it can export to PDF or JPG/PNG/etc.

Opalina de la mas gruesa 225grs.
Ademas, luego pego el patrón impreso a cartón Caple o en ingles coated board, el cual también puede ser reciclado de cajas de cereal y/o de algunos otros productos.

Hey guy !
I really enjoyed what you've done on this helmet ! Then I thought this tutorial has to be translated un another laguage. And guess what ? I'm a freaking Frenchie !

So anybody can download the french .pdf there : [link]

Hope that will be helpful ! I'm gonna make one with resin, following your model. If you want to check it out, that would be a pleasure !

(Please, be indulgent face to the mistakes I probably did ;p)

Hey that's cool, thank you for sharing it. I'll check it out and probably include it in the zip as manual_fr.pdf and if i have time i'll write an spanish version too, i think it'll be easier to check your translation there better than with the current english version.

About the resin i don't recommend it, at least not for hardening, the model gets quite hard using my technique, but the decision is up to you.

Enjoy the building process!.

Thx for your answer ! =)
I need to put resin onto the helmet because i want to make a mold.
Otherwise, i'll do a complete manual with details and tips on "how to build" the helmet. So if you want, i can give it to you when finished ! :)

This is really Awesome!! one question. Do we have to paint this or does it come with color?
Reply
:iconscannerjoe:
ScannerJOE Featured By Owner May 26, 2012  Hobbyist Artisan Crafter
The idea here is to print the pattern without color, to build a really hard surface using thick cardboard, so it can survive the painting process, which involves painting it with water diluted white glue to get a shine surface and then use silver spray paint for a metalic look.

That's very cool, though the main idea behind my technique was to avoid the use of resin for hardening purpouses, that´s why you should use thick cardboard.
